I thought we were going to leave it blank, and let the players fill it in?
Although, if she already comes with a name, that makes it easier on the writing, and leaves room for name based nicknames and such....hmm.
Why, what are you calling her? I haven't gotten a nickname for her in my head. If anything, Protag has become her name in my mind x'D

Oh, we are leaving it blank.

I just have my pet [edit]name[/edit] picked out for her

Ahhhh, I seeeeeee.
Do the physical characteristics of the characters influence what you want to call them?
Like, was it after seeing Keithys sketch that you made up a name?
I'm just wondering whether to have the character picture before having the name prompt or not.

Hm?

I'm not sure to include the character picture at all!
I was thinking that, if we include it, it should be like, in the game's credit's screen, or on the image we use to "Advertise" it-- but not actually in the game itself.

I mean, it's the whole point of leaving the namespace open-- the protagonist is you. If the protagonist suddenly doesn't look like you...

And no, in this case, I think the name just came up because Protagonist starts with P.

Hm, true, true. I wouldn't want to have the protagonist onscreen all the time anyway. Would become annoying.
Haha, advertising >.<
We'll have to do some of that, eventually. But thats a loooooooooooong way away yet.

I'm going to write up an outline tonight for us to tear apart *^*

Weeeell~
I wasn't planning on having protagonist onscreen at all.
So it was kind of a surprise to see the cute sketches...

We'll just send her out to each of the players to make a couple of sketches for them so they can play the game...

That could work very easily if we dont have end artworks or anything.
Or if the end artworks simply don't have her in them, heh.
I know in hatoful boyfriend, the main character does exist, but we never ever see her, not even an outline, or a description (apart from to say that she's really buff) and that actually seems to work really well.
It is very helpful though, to have the main characters face come up in the corner when they are speaking, in order for the reader to easily separate thoughts from words said out loud. Take for example that little demo thingy I put up- it is difficult to determine what the protag has said out loud and what they have thought, because the only difference is the lack of text in the top left hand corner of the speech box.
Though, that might just be my opinion because I read VN text pretty much as fast as I can click through it.

I tried not having a protagonist picture for a VN I half finished for a friend, but some of the end chapter artworks didn't make sense without her...so then I made up her physical side halfway through....and that turned out pretty icky.

Thoughts vs Speech

Problem solved.

Kay.
Uh.
That would be a great suggestion, and it is a typical convention, except, uh, the program...uh...can't do that, without a hell of a lot of fiddling around.

The text box that dialogue comes up in can be edited to have different fonts.
It CAN be set to be bold or italic. But then any text which comes up in that dialogue box is going to be in bold or italic.
The way to get around this is to make a duplicate of the entire scene, and swap between the two when we want italics or normal font.
http://www.visualnovelty.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=708&p=3894&hilit=italics#p3894
Or editing the program code, which apparently doesn't work.
http://www.visualnovelty.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=642&p=3511&hilit=italics#p3511

Or, I could try to make two dialogue boxes, one under the other, and simultaneously turn the visibility of one off and the other on when we want to have italicized text, then flick them back again when we want normal text.
But, uh, the switches don't happen instantly so, we could get some very very ugly mixed text crap going on.... Uh....I'll have to build it and test it. But I don't think it will work.

Don't bother.

Other solutions:
-Attribute thoughts to nobody (just don't put a name in the box)
-Write out thoughts as internal dialogue with personification of her mind (maybe this one could be a little chibi icon, that speaks to her when nobody is around, and she speaks back, talking to herself. Compare to Kyoko Mogami's little spirit thingies that point out her emotions.)
-Write out thoughts as as first-person description.
-Include Quotation Marks around any actual speech.
-Don't write any thoughts that aren't speech, aside from occasionally at the end of a scene, when nobody is there onscreen to be spoken to.
-Use a different program altogether.

I did that in the demo thingy, but I'm not sure if it worked so well.

Thats actually a really cute idea! What kind of sprite would we have?
Truly_An_Cat wrote:-Write out thoughts as as first-person description.

Those, or having thoughts in brackets, would also work. Do you think having both brackets and quotation marks and brackets would work?

I guess, the personalities and emotions should be strong enough to be conveyed without having internal dialogue, but, since we cant see protags face, do you think we need some way of conveying her emotions at times other than the end of a scene? Not to say they should be dictated at all times, because the player needs to be able to make some up as well.

Andddddd....I'm not keen on using another program.
I set out with the aim to use novelty to make something. If I bother learning about how it works and setting everything up, then abandon it, I'll be angry with myself.
