That stuff about nuanced characters, presenting a strong personality etc.
Yes! Yes yesyesyes
I absolutely agree.
Possibly this is an excuse to surf around on TVtropes and find us the personality types that the characters should present initially? I say that coz' they're pretty good at explaining personalities- so if you can't, just direct us to the page and we'll probably get it.

lololol
CHILL OUT 'KAY
your sketches are adorable o3o
Interesting style of drawing, too. And heheheh you got Charlies posture perfecto~
Are we looking for something similar to that style in an artist?

Idk.
At this point we could go anything from AT to anime (which is itself a wide category of artstyles) to airbrushed portraits (like, painted over photographs of people, the same way you're doing with the backgrounds) to ponies to stick figures.
One thing I noticedd when I drew them was that they kind of have their legs trail off, like ghosts.

TvTropes would ruin my life.
>__>
Ok, I'll poke around.

Find anything? Or didja avoid it, in the end?
TV Tropes is another one of those bloody time sinks, its true.

I wouldn't really want to go with airbrushed portraits, no offence, because no matter how well they're done, they're going to look odd, and the lack of outlining is going to make them blend into the background and look just, off somehow.
Also not keen on the stick figures/unfinished/superMSpaint look though paper scanner sketchyworld is something possible for a future project
Probs not heaps complicated or detailed anime characters, either, because the artists that do work like that take fooooooreverrrrr, from my personal experience of them, and it shits me to tears is rather frustrating.
Ponies LOLno
Though, if it was, I could at least just use the ponymaker already online hurr hurr I like fiddling with dollmakers way too much >.<

Don' use the ponymaker... ponies are super easy to draw, least of all because they don't have clothes-wrinkles to draw.

I think what we would do for anime, to make it timely, is have one artist to do the drawings, then have as many as four editors/digital artists to do the whole "conversion to line art" thing and digitally colour it too.

Oooooh.
Wow what a process!
I mean, yeah, it could make it timely. It COULD. Sharing the workload sometimes works like that, I guess. but there aren't that many people around who are keen to just do lineart, or to just do colouring. It pretty much goes down in levels of enthusiasm and ability from drawing->linearting-> colouring as far as I can tell.

Shush! Whenever I try to draw ponies they come out looking like dogs or something ;_;

I like it best when the look like Koopa Troopas (without shells).

Think of it like the people in manga studios where the credited artist does the drawings and then there's a team of people who ink the pages. (idk if they do it like that anymore, because technology.)

Well that got fairly off topic xD

To bring it back;
I really really want to sort out this character bizzo before another fortnight goes by.
Just understanding the main ones will make writing a lot easier, is all. Most hypothetical situations/dialogue I've come up with haven't quite hit the mark, but if we can get something solid as canon, I won't really need to worry about whether the interactions follow our head canons, as long as they match the actual canon, get me?

This is actually a really good example; one user did the pencil sketch, one person did the digital inking, and one person did the colouring.

Alright, then I know some people who might be interested in pencil sketching, and others whose lineart is really good, I'll get in touch with them and see what they think.
I only know one person who is really pretty good at colouring, but their work is...sporadic, to put it nicely. Hehh.

Unusual meaning...?
Eh, I know the people from mostly their anime pictures, but, that's just a product of what they think people want, so I reckon they can do other styles. Of course, I'll have to ask them.
What is your style of colouring like?

I don't usually do line art; my digital colouring is overlayed right onto the pencil sketch and paper. It gives it a nice texture, I think.

LIKE this.

Besides needing to trim them down a bit and not colouring out of the box, it's a good,Catty.

But like Itchi I know some good artists(*lives on deviantart,go figure*) but they probably won't help.

I erased out-of-border colouring most places. I left it on Charlie's back because it felt good.
Wasn't supposed to be published anyway, just a demonstration.

Re: Characters Ideas!

I tried that style of colouring once, but found that things weren't vibrant enough, because of the grainy paperness going on in the background.

The lineartists I'm thinking of are anime peeps.
Haven't contacted them yet though. First things are first, of course.
I've got the sketch artists (fairly extreme) interest and I've asked them to send through a few different styles samples if they are actually keen. Anime-ish, more realistic, and adventure timey. They're pretty consistent with producing art, from what I've seen, but don't do anything more than sketches.
I'll show you guys when if they send something back.

Honestly if things really have so much trouble getting going and people are as flaky as can be expected from regular humans, I'm happy to do lineart and have Cat colour shiet in.

Updates on the conversation with sketch artist:

Hey Keith!
I see you around in the 'draw the person above you' thread really frequently, and I love your sketches, they're really cute!
I had a bit of an agenda when I added you though, because I'm trying to make a visual novel, and currently we don't have anyone doing any character art! Our last artist left due to school.
Would you consider doing sketches of a few characters for the game? You would not need to outline or colour them, and of course you will get credit for them.
Aaaaanyway, if this sounds at all enticing whatsoever, please write me back and I can tell you more Smile

For real! your asking me to make sketch for your visual novel!!!!!XD

Ah yes! i would be happy to do so OMG! yes yes! to cool Thank you for choosing me to do so cuz i know lot of other that can do so much better then me!But in this case you choose me THANK YOU so much! and i won't make you regret asking me to help promise! Very Happy

Wow! What a great response!!
Alrightey, cool! I'm really glad to see you're enthusiastic!
I'll give you a bit of a brief on the basic idea of the story, and a list of characters, and you can tell me if you're still interested c:

GHOST: Date or Die

Protagonist is in her late teens, and can see ghosts. She gets a part time job, by some means, at a supernatural matchmaking agency- they help the spirits become at peace by helping them find their soul mates. If spirits don't find peace, bad things begin to happen in the physical world, such as people feeling massively depressed or suicidal, or other ways a ghost can actually be a threat. 'GHOST' is the name of the organisation (an acronym, idk for what yet though ehhhhehehehh). The protagonist can have one of several ends, being with a co-worker, a ghost, dying with or without either.

The main ideas of plot so far is that one of her co-workers ('Blondie') is somewhat dating a ghost(we'll call her GG), but the ghost gets upset a lot. Through the first half of the game, lots of smaller fun missions and scenarios get played out where you help ghosts get matchmade, or make friends with coworkers. The second half of the game begins to get more serious, as the ghost girlfriend of the Blondie begins to 'turn', and awful things happen in the office as well as in personal relationships, depending on how you handled things in the first half of the game.

The question is, Will you date, or will you die?

So thats the basic premise of the game.
So far we have 6 main characters;

Protag - somewhat undefined features, 17, female, quite cynical about the world
Blondie - co-worker blonde, about 19, playful
GG- co-worked girlfriend ghost, sweet nature (until shes not >: D)
Charlie- another co-worker, about 22, tall, sarcastic, brown hair, disheveled office-y look
The Boss- A slightly chunky, wise, calm in a crisis, middle aged woman in a dress suit
Freya- Protags friend from school, 17, punk rock lover, dark hair, dark eyes, enthusiastic but judgemental

If you're STILL keen after reading all of this, then I'd really like to see a test sketch of one of these characters, trying out a few different styles (ie. regular anime style, slightly more realistic, or adventure time-y style) because I've got to double check with the rest of the team.
Very Happy

I'm sure it will be fun working with you!

The story seem very interesting i'm a big fan of supernatural stuff!

I will do has you say for the different style of art

another think is everybody guy(male) except The Boss,Protag and GG?

I'm guessing they have to look creepy right like but not super creepy!

I'm glad you're still interested!
Freya is actually a girls name xD but you can draw her as a guy if you want ha ha ha it would be cool!
You are right! They don't have to be super creepy, more like, the cute style of creepy? But when ghosts go evil, we will need a super creepy version of then x]
I can't wait to see what you come up with!

OK so the only boys so far is Blondie and Charlie Kk

So far i have ProTag design but i'm gonna have to make a creepy/cute version has well
And working on Blondie (kind of hard to come up with but i can take care of it)

   Spoiler

And yes i still interested!  Is going to be just You and me for the moment or is someone else helping?

Yup, those are the only boys so far. There are going to be other male ghosts, of course, during the matchmaking in the first half of the game, but those ghosts probably won't need very many poses or expressions, and aren't as important.

Protag is so adorable! Could you give me the img code or link o I can show the others? Its not just me and you working on this project- I've got a musician (Catrow/Truly_An_Cat) and a story planner (Kebyll/Sinister Broadcast) and a girl helping me with the script (SpiderLondon).
We have our own forum, and once they're agreed with me that you're totally awesome to have as a character artist, I'll give you the forum link so you can sign up and chat with us all while we put the whole thing together and throw around ideas >w<
You don't have to draw every character to begin with, I just want to have a few samples of different styles of drawing. I'm really liking that example on the far right, with the big eyes OwO

Ah great! but i'm gonna still try to work on theme to see if i could come up with so face idea!

here the link you requested
http://imageshack.us/a/img9/1641/jh5r.jpg
The one is a little cartoonie i must say it was my first style of art so i was pretty hard to redo but i'm glade you like that one!

Wow that all lot of people helping out i can see we are gonna have lot of fun together i hope!...

i will be waiting

So what do you guys think?
They are keen, have been reliably online and posting sketch art twice a week for about the last 4-6 months. I doubt they'll pike out.
And I reckon the protag design on the far right is cute/creepy/cartoon (which matches the themes of cutesy romance, ghostly creepy, and the cartoonified backgrounds), and we could get the bodies done in a somewhat more adventure timey style.
Because if we had the bodies drawn all small, they might just look like chibis, which I'd rather not, but I do really rather like the eye style. It looks...idk...haunted, somewhat. heh.

Holy crap.

I am a bit put off by the prevalence of exclamation marks, but I can't deny that--
that's hot.

Your synopsis does bring up a thing for me though, but that might be better discussed in another thread (or even PMs). Making the first half of the game mainly about Ghost Dating, and the second half about Ghost Fighting (or something), seems like a bad idea. Unbalance, and the people who particularly like one thing and not the other will only play half of the game (or none at all, if it's the second half they would like). Might make more sense to give each of, say, three chapters, three (or so) different storylines to follow: Ghost Dating (probably a one-shot contained within a chapter), Blondie's arc, (which starts weak in chapter 1 but becomes more important later,) Charlie's arc, (wherein we not only learn a lot about Ghosts, but maybe get a peek into his personal life).

I'm thinking Freya, unless she has a particular storyline, might just be there to root Penny in some kind of realism (school, etc), and also to introduce controls to the player, mention things in the news (mass suicide?), or whatever other exposition we need to tell, not show.

Of course, if she ends up with her own plot/storyline instead, that's fine too.

I know right?
I think her stuff is awesome, and she's great at poses, too, from what I've seen.
I'm going to give her a link to this forum and tell her to begin posting in the WIP area, and chatting with us about characters physical designs, if you guys don't mind?

Yeah, my synopsis is a little off, thats true, but it usually gets the idea across in a fairly non confusing way- I was lazy and used exactly the same synopsis that I had typed to Sinister originally, even though the ideas have actually evolved over time.
I should work on writing up a more accurate one for getting people on board in future. Heh.

all of the articles in the "How to make an OC" area are going to be excellent.
I just linked the "Depth" one, since I was complaining about extraneous details earlier.

*reads a few articles*
Shit, well we're already breaking some of the 'donts' by having the Protag have this amazing power of talking to ghosts for no explicable reason.
Should I make up some sort of plausible thing behind that?

Also 'death of family and friends for freedom and tragedy'
.... Loophole in that even if we decide to make her mother dead, since she can speak to ghosts, she doesn't see it as tragedy nor freedom?
Death of friends...shiet, well, its cliche, but, its called date or die for a reason, so, well, that seems inevitable to some degree.

'must risk life for friends'
....Crap, well, since shes a jerk, we're always going to have the option to not put yourself in a dangerous situation.

Characters controlling other characters through their sexiness alone....Yeah, thats not going to happen. No matter even if you end up dating, its not going to be a sexiness based story pairing.

Sentimentality is power? Ugh. I cannot imagine that will be occurring within the story.
Understanding and saying different things is going to cause different reactions in people, and its nothing to do with sentimentality, or increasing your power.

No-- basically, it's part of the world. It's not overly fantastic, there-- it's like being an adequate violinist. Some people are.
(although in this case it's a natural talent as opposed to years of training. so maybe it's more like... being an adequate songwriter?)
