Hmm.... I'll try one more time with a reference picture, completely flat colours, hard brush, this time. The reference pictures you linked kinda helped- but not much, because they're not indoor environments. Hard lines and rooms are a lot different to forests and skies.

Question

What do you actually want out of this project?
What outcomes will you measure as a 'success'?
Like, what things are you really concerned that we get 'right'?

For example, I will think of it as a success if it is completed by the end of the year or sooner.
What I want out of this is not as much the product itself, as much as something fun and productive to occupy my time and entertain people later.

Ok, this is cool. It's a little blurry and a little abstract, which I reckon will make the foreground stand out better.

(I didn't link anything indoors because what was in front of me was like, "detail each individual floorboard")

My goals, I think, are to finish. I want it to be good, but I don't expect perfect.

I'd like the art to be good, I'd like to have minimal glitch/errors. I'd like to take a bit of the coding work, because I feel like you're already doing four jobs. For a success, I want other people to enjoy it, too.

"Detail each individual floorboard"
;_;
NOT GUNNA HAPPEN AHAHAHHAHAHA

Yeah I chose the picture because damn those chairs are fantastic.

Alrightey, now, whats your standard of 'good art'?
I know my handiwork is a little shakey //the lament of a mousedrawn gimp art person
but I think, maybe, is there too much contrast in that pic?

The thing about the game is that you can run it fullscreen or in a little popout box thingy, and drag the corner to the resolution you want ie. theres no set resolution.
Makes it a little tricky to know what level of detail the background and characters should be.
I'd honestly rather if it was set, but idk if novelty is capable of that.

Four jobs? >o>
Sure, but the coding work is going to come next to last-ish.

We can give it out to people on the novelty forums/ MCL/ Gaia for teh lolz when we are done, so thats easy pie~

Backgrounds, majority of coding, it sounded like you were planning on working on some of the writing.
I was thinking of making you record music too, because you're impressive.

[EDIT]
I forgot the rest of this post, because I"m an idiot:

I don't like your character drawings, if the links on MCL are any indication. It's sloppy looking, the brush far too broad for my tastes. I'm looking for something that will pop. What you posted above? That's excellent. But you can imagine it wouldn't be excellent for foreground character portraits.

I guess I'm looking for consistent proportions, and if we end up with "anime" as the  style of choice, then nothing too awkward looking. Above all, consistency is key. But it needs to be consistent goodness.

It's also terrible.)

what? Come on, you can't be pro at everything.

so shaddap. your people are a thing but I don' like 'em in that style.

They're people made of smush. Tumblr comics, k, but I think the foreground, being the focus of attention (generally), should have a more polished look.

Meh, some people just draw really slowly.
My housemate was like that- I'd go through three sketchbooks to her one. But her figures were never crooked or misshapen. She uses guidelines, while I'm like LALALA HERE'S ONE LINE THAT'S ALL YOU GET ~

I guess they're just skills we have to work on *shrug*
Have you found any other interested character artists?

Did I ever tell you people don't like me?

What style do you think would work best over that kind of background? (I like the background. We're keeping it. It is now the basis for our whole game.)

Wow, suddenly decisive! I like it.

I'll try to do another background in a similar style and we'll see if it works.
I'll do that next weekend.
You should write up something substantial, begin some character theme music it something like that by next weekend <·< or find an artist.
Yeah. I delegate the search to you.
I see no reason why people would not like you and if the artist didn't then it would make the project awkward and more difficult than need be.

Honestly, I don't give a damn what style as long as they don't run off halfway through.I guess a nice matching style would be one with bright character colours and a style that doesn't mind being unrealistic.

Yeah I should probably do more rectangular stuff the other way in future, but it should fit in the same way the office picture will fit.
Might not have as much of the sky showing when regular talking text is going on, but it leaves room for lovely camera panning shots~

I tested it out in the program already;
-both pictures have to be set as objects and not as backgrounds, which is fine because then their opacity can be turned on and off, allowing us to change backgrounds within a scene.

Do you want to link me to another background type picture?
I'm having trouble finding an applicable balcony or other front reception desk type pictures.
Otherwise, if I get bored, I have one of a nice park that I might work on which might work well for some outdoor ghostly/romancey scenes ;D

Isn't text going at the bottom? "there won't be as much of the sky showing", I don't think I've ever seen a game where the text boxes covered the sky.

And, nah. I might be up for pic searching later but right now I'm super lazy (fell asleep at 2300, woke up at 0300, been up ever since, now it's 0741, prolly gonna take a nap here in a bit).

Ghost-Romance scenes could be interesting, because you could work with really washed-out colours for one, and maybe a night scene would be neat too!

[EDIT]
Like, a night-version of another scene. That park, for instance, a day shot and a night shot.

Oh, oh! "The office sure is spooky after hours"!!!

Yessss! Colour editingggg!!

We can put text wherever we like *shrug*
It makes sense for it to be at the bottom or up the side, but in the sketch I did before of the layout, it was at the bottom.

What I mean is that, hmm....how to explain it.... The area of the game is a defined resolution, and because the image is not that resolution, I can drag the image up or down. Um, so, the information of the whole picture is there, but the general screen at normal head height, because of the resolution, will lose the top third of the picture.

My sleep schedule is non-existant. For a while I was trying to make it easier to talk with you, but then I got caught up in a thing on Gaia, and now I'm just messed up.

What is the defined resolution of the game (And, more square or widescreen?)
Can we overlap the text box with the background [object]? That way, we lose the bottom third of the screen, only when the text box is there.

Also: Interesting locations:
The morgue underneath the Agency building.
The abandoned school.

I realized we haven't really done any of the horror bits.

So, that actually leads me to bring up plot (look, I'm off topic!): I think ghostgirlfriend needs to play a huge part in this story no matter which branch we go into. Maybe she turns anyway? Maybe ghosts can only actually spend so much time until the devolve into wraiths and one branch sets her off and makes her hostile, but the other branch allows her to slowly go insane, making her hostile?

What are your ideas for ghost-dating? Are we actually going to do that?

(Or maybe Blondie and Ghostgirlfriend are only big players in the beginning chapters of the game, and the A-chapters have Blondie come back as a ghost to continue working until his time is up?)

A roleplaying thing on gaia, or just an event?

The resolution can be;
640 x 480
800x 600
1024 x 600
1024 x 768
1600 x 1200

I'd rather it be one of the smaller two because peoples artworks aren't exactly high resolution, and these kind of games are usually small like that >w<

Yes we can overlap the text box with the background- It can be semi transparent, too. I'm pretty sure I can hide the text box at stages, but I'll have to look up a tutorial because my experimenting has gotten no results.
Do you wanna draw up a text box for the speech and then I can show you a screenshot of the main game screen?

A morgue would be cool, but why would it be underneath the agency building?
We'd have to have some sort of explanation for that, I reckon.
School scenes should be easypeasypie.

Ahaha well, as long as we discuss things somewhere. I mean, technically its a work in progress so talking about plot here is at least in the right subforum.

Is it silly if I want to involve ghost matchmaking simply because some of the people whom I wanna give it to have dead characters that I'd like to reference? Its sortof like 'in' jokes, I guess, just with the side character ghosts with whom you have to matchmake.

I think blondie and ghostgirlfriend should be like, an ongoing theme in the background of the first half, like, you see it going on, but you're busy doing other stuff and your new job and whatnot, then in the second half you either become personally involved in the situation out of...well, potential dating or potential dying?
It would be nice to have one ending where she doesn't turn... but the only the ending in which I can see that happening is if blondie kills himself.
OOOO MORAL CONUNDRUM
Do you help kill your friend to stop a ghost going morbid, because they are a great match?
Do you convince them not to die and face the frightening consequences?

Oh, see, I see him dying in pretty much every reality where she does turn! Even things where it's like, "Ah, the only way to save everybody is to sacrifice myself *goes to her arms* ah, I always loved you" ker-splode

But uh, a bit more eloquently.

Then let us brainstorm for Part 1 (or like, the first half). It needs to be something that can tie in at the end. Maybe we can take Bestfriend and throw her into the mix to raise the stakes.

Darkest End (dark for both parts): Bestfriend is kill'd
Dark End: Ghostgirlfriend-Monster is defeated. This doesn't sound so bad but then there's both emotions and feels. Maybe Blondie kills himself (residual ghost-energy?)
The End: Blondie and Ghostgirlfriend-Monster share an embrace that ultimately kills him, but quells her. During the conclusion it is revealed that Blondie is a ghost as well, they're ghosts together, and their relationship is actually a lot more stable now ("I finally understand *ghost stuff*!")
Light End: Ghostgirlfriend-Monster is defeated, with no major damage to anyone or their psyche. Protagonist may or may not pursue a relationship with Blondie. Blondie may or may not commit suicide.
Lightest End (Hit on Ghostgirlfriend at every oppourtunity): Ghostgirlfriend never turns. She and Protagonist become a couple. Blondie may or may not kill himself. Bestfriend may or may not hook up with Blondie.

Just... some ideas.
What was your idea?
And, we do need to dream up that first story arc.

The morgue is under the building because the building was built on... I dunno, prolly not a hospital (lol I just typed hostpital). Senior Care Facility? A school, a clinic, a restaurant, I suppose there's all kinds of buildings that might have a morgue!

AHAHA, MAYBE PART 1 IS YOUR FRIEND IS HAVING BOYFRIEND TROUBLES SO YOU MURDER HIM.

*points to a new thread area in brainstorming*

Lets take this convo over there? ^^"

A restaurant with a morgue.
.______.
Realllllly.... I mean, a lot of buildings in the city are just built on graveyards in general. Or....maybe thats just my city :/ My university is partially built inside an old jail after all... But I don't hear about morgues just being built around very often.
We could always just have a graveyard in town?
I know its cliche but hey its realistic, I'm pretty sure ghosts would rock up there for their own funerals.
