Re: Background Art
Idk, I was watching a ghost show (my gran loves 'em, sigh) and they were like, "we're in the old folks home, and this part is the morgue"
And I was like... hey... yeah!
Morgues are creepy, and it's totally mysterious if you have one downstairs

Re: Background Art
I totally missed this post earlier,
But if it has fullscreen capabilities, then it needs to be high-res, right?
I actually figured it would be kinda high res images, but I s'pose it depends on what we get.
Maybe to start, or just to get through with the writing, we should make a super small one. You know the map-walking sprites in Pokemon (red) or a similar game? We should do it at that size, really simple graphics.
Itchigotchi wrote:The resolution can be;
640 x 480
800x 600
1024 x 600
1024 x 768
1600 x 1200
I'd rather it be one of the smaller two because peoples artworks aren't exactly high resolution, and these kind of games are usually small like that >w<

Re: Background Art
Sure ^^"
I'll try to find a picture of a morgue to base the drawing on.
...hi res might make you cry because the art ain't sophisticated
But meh. Takes just as much effort in programming, but more in the art d department.
I'll see what I can do, I guess. At least the edges should be smooth...

Re: Background Art
No ruuuush.
Ruined buildings are a plus too, right? I figure they're fun to draw.
A stock of ruined buildings, a stock of romantic locations, we'll probably use these. I don't want to push anything useless on you, though.

Re: Background Art
By the way, what dimensions should the text box be? Should I make it semi-transparent, or is that something that should be done in-game, in-code?
Re: Background Art
If you look at the demo you will get an idea of size, however I guess 800x 200 seems about right. I can alter transparency easily in the program , and who knows if it should be more or less transparent without seeing it over the background, so make it solid
Re: Background Art
A THING
YES
ITS A PARK
You would not believe how hard my brain had to work to figure out how to turn a suburban reference picture into a parklands, but I think it worked pretty well ;w;

More things
All credit to Sinister Broadcast for the lovely photography~
(I did ask you if I could use your snaps at some point, didn't I? @_@ You never suggested anything so I just picked one that could be helpful)
Cemetary

But my more favourite version, cemetary at dusk

Re: Background Art
That's actually amazing, if this actually makes it into the game, I will geek sooo bad. A nice little tribute to my church.
Re: Background Art
Heheh, I don't see why it wouldn't? Its just about the same quality as the other background arts, and having a scene at a graveyard is not beyond the scope of a novel featuring ghosts ;D
I'll let everyone preview what they're going to look like in the actual game as backgrounds when I finish one more, and upload it, n put a link in the tiny demo area. Imageshack kills the resolution and pixelates the shit outta them so, technically, they should look heaps better in-game.

Sign up for dropbox, it won't compress your files and if it's in the "public" folder, you'll be able to link/embed right from there.

Re: Background Art
Bloody dropbox
I've been told to use it a few times now, so I guess I should
You're supposed to install it on your computer or something, aren't you?
EDIT: Er... So heres the folder imma dump the arts into
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1u7u9fctisd1cqz/evuExgKXLJ
Uh, does that work?

Re: Background Art
Excellent.
Do you think I should put up half done paintings and update them as I go?
and reference pictures in the folder too, and ask for opinions on which pictures would be good to use?

Re: Background Art
No.
I don't think you should do any of that.
Actually-- the first two, you can, it probably won't affect anything.
I don't think you should ask which ones to use, though. You might ask for other people to look at your art and JUDGEYOU it, like we were doing earlier, but not required.
Instead, if you really want to include a certain backdrop, make sure to brainstorm a scene for it-- Why are we in the kitchen? GGF is peeling vegetables for a delicious soup. Oops, the knife slipped, right into her lungs!
That kind of stuff.

Re: Background Art
I've noticed you mention GGF failing at cooking a few times, heh, you're keen on the kitchen scene aren't you~
Of course I'm goin' to ask for comment, this thread ish all about judging anyway, I mean, the whole first page and most of the second is about failing and trying to find the right style, so I'm sure there are other things that could be improved.
I put up the 3/4 done city street thingy I'm working on.
Its annoying though because CARS.
CARS MAN.
Without them, it looks deserted. And with them, is probably going to look retarded because my automobile drawing skills are at the dot to dot book level.

Re: Background Art
Aren't you just painting right over the original photo?
Anyway, maybe do one WITHOUT CARS, DUN DUN DUUUUUUNNNN!!!

Re: Background Art
Yeah I pretty much am, but even when I try to paint some things they turn out very strange- like, a photo has so many pixels of different colour, and I've sorta gotta blur my eyes and figure out which one is most representative.
Then with cars and their shiny bits and seethrough glass, it gets all bitty and complicated to match. Yar. I'm just going to leave them out for now.
Who knows, maybe it's an alternative reality future/present where everyone walks or rides bikes. Basically Amsterdam. That place has insane amounts of bikes.

Re: Background Art
After building a walkaround, I realized I pretty much only made one indoor environment.
The thing is, its really hard to find reference pictures that are at the correct eye level for indoor environments, and aren't massively detailed.
Any ideas on other indoor environments needed?
I suppose we need another one for the office, because having just that one little room is lame.
And probably a kitchen, and some kinda roof things. But what kind, what sort of style?
