Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
So, what other graphic novel style games have you guys played?
-Hatoful Boyfriend
-Holiday Star (Hatoful Boyfriend Sequel)
HOHOHOHO HEARTBREAKING TT_TT
-Junipers Knot
Its sooooo pretty and the music is so lovely I got hypnotized
It really is more like a normal novel in that you dont really get choices
-Jurassic Heart
I just....laughed x'D cyute~
-Star project
The minigames are kinda fun, but then having to do them endlessly to progress makes me pissed
-MCL obviously~
GODDAMN YOU 'ACTION POINTS'
-Galaxy Angel Dating Sim
Theres got to be some sort of penalty for knocking out girls in fights that often...
-Kudos (idk if its dating specifically but theres romance?)
I played it so long ago I only remember having to try really hard and plan carefully just to keep protag from being depressed :l
Opinions, comments? x'D

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Just played 'witch spell' for research!
Some free visual novel dating story on Android.
Made my phone crash once but it was cute and pretty short, and made by a pretty small team, too.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Read a few more free novels...
-moonlight walks
A cute story with a nice premise and 4 very different endings
-reaching out
A single plot story with no choices, about bullying.
Wherein you, the main character, are a bully coming to terms with it
-wintertale
A short story withlovely artwork and a sarcastic depressed Russian as the main character.
Maybe its just the Christmas special of a larger game? Idk. It had a lot of internal dialogue.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
PFf, I'm really hurting in this department. I've been through the Love Hina and Galaxy Angel Sim Date games, both very similar, prolly both by the same team.
I've played (once) through Sim Date (by Sim Man), which is a bit more elaborate and a lot longer (though still not that great).
Watched a playthrough of "don't take it personally babe, it just ain't your story" which was indie, but I'm pretty sure was also commercial (and based on a book iirc).
I... I think that's all.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Yeah, I think the pure dating games are....well they take me too long to get through.
And I fail and get frustrated >:Ufailing at talking to fictional characters is not really that fun
That last little list only took about a half hour each.
45 minutes for the one with alternate endings.
I heard about them through the MCL games forums, and then found other random links *shrug*
I reckon each episode of ours taking a half hour would be quite a nice amount of time.
And after playing some visual novels on my phone, I realized, that IS actually quite fun, but idk how to make things app compatible :l
I'm basically just reading them to get a feel for whats normal, what character interactions and personalities are out there, the writing styles, what techniques people use to get the players into the story, the different storyline programming (some have no choice, some have choices that do minor story loops but dont affect the outcome, some have wildly different outcomes and few choices).
Idk, its not necessary, but its time-wasting fun research for me since my social life is in the doldrums atm hurr hurr hurr

SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH
Okay I just got like addicted to Cafe Rouge
a browser based clicky adventurey thing
about vampires, with minigames of cooking muffins and cakes xD
It had like, 7 episodes or installments, and the password from the end of one would set you on a new path in the next one, which was kinda cool....but then I became obsessive and tried to get all of the passwords T_T
And the further along you go more and more options end in death!
Its just like those choose your own adventure books from when I was young, damnit, except I don't have my finger marking the last page in case I need to go back! :l
*cough* anyway uh yes effective mix of episodic and branching storylines
and now I know what temperature to cook a cannoli at

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Not really?
I mean, if I only played one, then yes. Yes that would be bad.
I figure, its kinda like a literature review, but with indie visual novels. So that I can figure out trends, or methods of storytelling that I haven't seen before, idk. I go in with a semi-critical mindset, and question why the things that make them effective actually work.
I mean, everything taints everything, right? My current lifestyle and mindset is going to taint the way I tell stories, the people I meet are going to influence my approach, opinions on things etc. Everything in the mind is dynamic.
So I figured, rather than accidentally copying or going along the same lines as the very very few I've played, I'll read more, to widen my approach. Sortof like how writers also read books, and artists also look at other peoples work.
I realize the creativity doesn't exist in a vaccuum and find merit in acknowledging the outside;
If I only use a drop of red dye in the uncoloured water, I'll end up with extractable shades of red or pink, but if I put in lots of different colours, it is possible to extract and refine many different shades. Does that make sense?
Also, they're fun.

Here, we shall have a fantastic writers context comparison between your writing, London , and mine! C:
And if I'm too harshly influenced by what I experience, then London shall be the more 'pure' writer ;D

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
I'm just thinking, writers read a lot. They don't read at all while writing.

Touche
And I'm not currently writing, so your suspicions are confirmed

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
No, not all writers are like that. I usually read my own work either while I'm writing it or if I want to see if the story thus far seems good. I read as if I'm the reader.
And yes, Itchi, I will be the pure writer.

...that's kind of clearly not what I meant?SpiderLondon wrote:No, not all writers are like that. I usually read my own work either while I'm writing it or if I want to see if the story thus far seems good. I read as if I'm the reader.

When career novelists begin on a book, they generally start writing and don't read any one else's work until they've finished. Obviously this doesn't apply to all of them (which I shouldn't need to say, but suddenly feel I must...), but whenever I watch an interview or read an article written by an author (which addresses this topic), that's the approach they take. Otherwise, they'll claim, they'll be influenced by the other work and, to put it shortly, plagiarize.
Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
...Oh. ^^; I do get some ideas from other stories that relate to mine so i know how they write it, how they word it, what they do to the characters, etc. all for research and making sure I know how to keep away from plagiarizing others. I won't say I haven't, I'm sure I have with some stories but I try not to.
Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
...right. That's exactly why other ones stay away from reading things. Because then they know how someone else wrote it, worded it, what they did with the characters, etc.SpiderLondon wrote:...Oh. ^^; I do get some ideas from other stories that relate to mine so i know how they write it, how they word it, what they do to the characters, etc. all for research and making sure I know how to keep away from plagiarizing others. It's like deciding you'll write a story about a young mage who goes to a wizard's college, and then reading Harry Potter, "for research".
Then you don't risk drawing parallels, you don't have to worry about treading on eggshells, you get your, own, unadulterated, story.
I'm sure it's different for people who write for a living.
But I thought it was worth mentioning.
Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Ugh, no way.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Sorry, those were exclusive things-- either A, you have taken cues from the source material, or B, you are intentionally avoiding plagiarism. That's how it usually happens.
Also, I haven't read it-- but am I supposed to recognize your "research", in your reading? Chances are, I'm not familiar with your "source", so I can't compare.

Oh-- it was a fanfiction anyway.
Which intentionally draws from a source material.
Ok.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Mister L wrote:Luigi got back to house that held only Mario's name. He had never said anything about it, but he had never been happy about not ever being mentioned on the house. He just wanted one thing! His name, or an "L," or anything! He didn't mind if it was stupid, he wanted to be mentioned at least! Sure, Professor E.Gad had built him a new mansion, with all those ghosts changed to domsticated pets and helpers, but it felt too spacious and lonely for him. Besides, no matter what else the the Professor might do, he would make sure something inside the mansion would watch Luigi everywhere he'd go, no privacy at all. But, all in all, he knew that his timid personality would always keep him from saying anything about it.
Just a couple of things-- spelling, grammar, flow-- that I thought I would poke.
Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Yar, I'm not so keen on plagiarizing. Er. But I'm pretty good at avoiding it, too.
The only game that had a tiny hint of being even slightly similar to our concept was one about a ghost girl you meet on the beach, who turns up every full moon :/
That kinda nancy drew romance mystery is not really the direction we're headed in.
But yeah, I get you about reading WHILE writing.
When I/we do actually start, I figure I'll be too preoccupied with falling into the world we're creating to bother with other peoples work.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Eh, I didn't like the first chapter as much as the second. Plus my head was asleep.
People liked my story anyways, so I will keep writing.

Re: Graphic Novel/Dating Games!
Oh, I'm certainly not telling you to stop writing.
I was just editing, as nitpicking is sort of my strong suit, and I thought that paragraph could use it most. ((I wasn't saying that grammar, spelling, and flow were off EVERYWHERE, I was just saying, I hit those three things in that paragraph and fixed 'em.))
