Post by Truly_An_Cat Mon Jun 17, 2013 6:16 am

So here I am and it's already morning; I've stayed up the entire night accidentally.

Er, I'm a musician of sorts, a chronic whiner. I'm twenty-one years old and go to university. I have a problem with starting projects I don't finish.

Other site-users (which mostly means you two guys) can ask me stuff if you want. I'll rant here if I'm feeling it. But I'm not right now, right now I'm wondering how I'm going to get a little bit of sleep without staying in bed all day.

Question 1: Insomniac much?
How little sleep does it actually take to make your brain unable to function?
My limit is about 4 hours- I begin to forget where I am or what I'm doing at that point @_@

Question 2: Whatcha studyin'?

Ah....that explains your singing stuff a bit more.
Do you find that having to study something creative like that makes it less enjoyable?
What sort of performances do you do? Do you have a fav genre?

Nonono, you have it backwards-- It's not that I sing because I have to study singing, and it makes it less fun. It's that singing is fun and I sing lots, so studying singing is... well, not "a breeze", but I do it 'cause it's what I enjoy. (that's the beauty of university, no?) I can't imagine doing anything else-- because I frankly can't be assed to do anything else.

I guess its the same for me and environmental studies though, I'm interested in and enjoy what I'm doing so it feels like less of a chore to me than it does to others.

Oh, I guess I didn't think of it like that-- the explanation there is that it's music theory stuff, and the vocal training is to be like... a classical singer, or even opera a little bit, but I'm way more into pop and pop accessories. I want stuff that sounds cool, Classical music usually doesn't do that for me.

And, yeah. Those acapella stuff? "The Party Hasn't Ended"? "Never Ending Strife"? Almost all the stuff on my soundcloud is pony stuff. I'm a bit of a freak.

Heheheh, tried singing Bolts & Rainbow for an audition somewhere but I didn't know it too well and the pressure was on and I BLEW IT SO HARD.
What're you laughing at!?

I mean, I like... idk, I'm into catchy stuff like disco, I'm into melodic metal, and barbershop is neat-- I like the textures in rap & dubstep (though very different), I like the simplicity of house. I like hooks. I like melodies that grab you and pull. I like songs that I have to groove to. I like songs that I hate but I have to groove to. Does that give you a sense of what I mean?

Classical music is non-repetitive and oftentimes, in my opinion, bland. I'd much rather sing showtunes than opera, but my study goes even farther than opera; I'm supposed to sing Brahms and... others, whose name I can't remember. Blah.

The laughing was erm... ermm... mostly me being a jerk?

Yeah I tried to audition for a musical with a disney princess song and...yeah I blew that too xD
Mostly because I forgot the music so I tried to play it myself...then my hands were so shaky I could barely play...ugh it was a messsssss

I get what you mean by being unable to groove to classical. And they either have too much like, technical crap trying to make the soloists show off, without enough cohesive melody, or they are just way too repetitive. No offence about singing about god and all but theres only so many times I want to say those words... Eh maybe thats just choir music I'm thinking of.

Brahms...oh goddddd... We did his requiem last semester... And I think it immediately left my mind as soon as it was done. The words!! The words!! I just cant. sing. german. T_T
I think my most favourite classical performance was Berlioz Requiem. That composer was nuts. Four seperate full brass bands in each corner of the the church, so everyone was singing like ffffffffffffffffff*pass out*
And now we sing this movement at double time in the pub because it was actually catchy to a degree https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT-aYBX_KXI x'D

That's why I'm fond of your music (vocals & accompaniment): your melody is simple enough to be catchy, your harmony is repetitive enough to get but complex enough to be interesting, and then your words reflect deep meaning (or healthy pessimism).
Now, I'm fully aware that it's possible to write lyrics that are abstract enough look meaningful without having any meaning at all. But if that's the trick, you pull it off.

Sorry about going into this again. You kind of stunned me.

Kyaaaah~ Nuuu thats okay~
I write songs to deal with things I want to say but can't, or emotions I don't want to express but need to. And catchy melodies are a must because otherwise I'd never remember them!
Idk, with a lot of them its like drawing poison out of myself, makes me feel better.
Derp. I don't particularly think I'm deep but...I grew up in a town of hippies and potheads so maybe I have a different interpretation of that word xD

Do you write lyrics? I can't tell with your stuff whether its original or covers or remixes or where its from really at all. Maybe I'm just not catching the pop culture references though ._.'

I write lyrics but they're not good. And I usually write from the POV of somebody who does have strong emotions-- but not really having them makes it harder for me to write. I s'pose I should be grateful that I don't get my heartbroken but instead I complain that it really hampers my songwriting.

Some of the time I write... well. But it's silly, and it's filled with "inside jokes," gags that don't actually translate to linguistic genius.

So, yeah. To not ramble, I'll just say, when I'm not trying to be funny, when I'm trying to seem serious, it's very transparent, very clear I don't have anything to say. ...And in best cases, it comes across as funny anyway.

Dang, maybe you need some turbulence in yo life~
But, I'm getting the feeling you're the sortof person who just glides along anyway, not really minding?

Most of the stuff I write isn't actually about heartbreak per say... idk, crappy people, friendships, silly things...
I guess it depends who you're trying to impress by your lyrics, whether you think they're good or not? I don't really care if they come out stupid, coz then I can improve? ehehhehhh. My lyrics from when I was 11 make me cringe and want to hide the music far far away where nobody will ever find it. xD They always seem worse in hindsight.

Dude. This is your rambling space. You're contradicting its very essence by not rambling. I'm rambling more than you. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOUR LACK OF RAMBLE

No, I'm basically putting off stuff refreshing for your next message to show up.
I GUESS I glide and don't mind, but sometimes I wish I had the turbulence other people have.

I look at old lyrics, old songs, and... my writing hasn't improved much. I cringe at some stuff, but I also find a lot that I still think is usable-- like, I haven't progressed at all in years and years and years.
Anymore, I don't try to impress people artistically. There are far better artists out there. And as much as I love performance (in anything), there are much better performers out there. So when I do a song for the weekly compo, it's usually something absurd and experimental (I basically did a chiptune-style song, but I did it all acapella with words that represented the soundeffect in the story), ot it's just silly.
'm trying to think of songs I did that were purely humorous, I can't actually think of any. I guess I just made semi-serious stuff that had a premise to ridiculous people didn't take it seriously, but them thinking it was funny was good enough-- a positive reaction.

Fair enough, I guess. Maybe you've just found a style you're comfortable in? Or...that your style is experimental to begin with?? I dont really know.
I get pissed at myself sometimes for using the same old key signatures and chord progressions that I'm comfortable with...but then I realize a lot of nice music is actually really simple and don't feel so bad, I guess. Derp I'm addicted to pop chords.
I wanna learn more about making pretty beats, percussion stuff...because mine all just....they are so goddamn crappppp. Its not like I have the coordination to actually PLAY drums, so that means I've got to write it out in musescore, and I'm not familiar with how drums music actually looks, so I put in patterns which just sound awkward and awful! Are there certain things in particular you're working on improving/just wish you were good at?

"I'm forever doing dishes" is like that humorousness, like, its meant to be funny and make people laugh, but actually I'm kinda annoyed my housemate has everything so messy and doesn't give a flying fuck about it unless the landlord is coming.
Still don't have the guts to play it while shes around though OHOHOHOHO
Do you have housemates?

No. I'm the worst kind of person, I still live with my mum and dad. Although, they kind of kicked me out, which I'm not getting into. I'm currently living with my gran until I fix up arrangements.

You're excellent and your work would be excellent but you're limited by your equiptment. With a decent mic, it'd be that much better. With the appropriate program, you could release your amazing stuff in better quality.
Or you could just grab a producer who already works in that kind of thing. Cherax Destructor-- did you listen to the link I linked you? He said he was busy and I should do a project with you but I told him to remember you when he "had room to breathe", 'cause he's could make you shine well beyond what I'm capable of doing.

But, with your skiiiillzz, you could totally hook a keyboard up to your computer, compose and arrange in a DAW, sing your stuff, mix, release.

I'm probably wishing I was good at some things, or trying to be good at some things, but I can't remember them right now.

Ehhhh that doesn't make you the worst kind of person- I'm sure thats fairly normal. It costs a lot to go to college in your country doesn't it, and having house bills on top of that with minimal income would be almost impossible.
I got a scholarship from the government to support meh.

Sure, equipment...someday >_>'
I didn't get a link from you...? But I looked up his name just then anyway.
His stuff /is/ really well mixed ;_;
But Ah. Sydney...so far away... And a producer... Erm. I...er... don't think my stuff is good enough...to bother with... erm....thanks for uh...putting in a good word, I guess?

Digital Audio Workstation. Like Ableton Live or FL, to name a few popular ones. I loooove Ableton Live, but it's hella expensive and my tiny baby laptop can't run it anyway. That WIP vocaloid cover was composed & mixed (etc) with Ableton.

Nope, I'm on financial aid too. Not even a scholarship-- you have to have some redeeming quality to get one of those; you have to earn it. So I don't need an income, not even a minimal one, and it's a good thing; I've never held a job, ever.

You don't have to go there (to Sydney). You've done an internet collaboration before, that's what I was thinking of here.
I'm pretty sure I linked "Loveshines" to you on MCL at some point.

I mean, I'm you or I could find another producer but I just picked him because you reminded me of him and I thought your styles would fit really well together.

Personally I'd love to work with you (you know, in music), but I'm way below your level artistically, and then your equipment isn't up to par for doing anything. ((Although your video-camera microphone is way better than your cell-phone microphone. You could probably get away with recording audio through your camera.))

Ooooh!
I downloaded fruityloops once...but there were so many buttons! I didn't know what to do and it was 3am so I closed it and just never got around to reinstalling it when my computer died. It looks pretty complicated though~

Dude if we're talking about job failure the only one I ever had was being a tour guide at a sewage treatment plant, and I got fired.
I think that pretty much puts me into negative points on the employment scale.
Yay for free money!...sortof

Ehhhh I dont remember you sending me any links. The last stuff we said was about -- *checks email*....okay I swear that message DID NOT show up beforehand.... and theres a duplicate of them, even!
Hahaha and here I was just thinking you picked him because he was a music friendship fan you knew in aus~ hehehhh

My video camera is better than my cell phone? Interesting. Most of my sung stuff whether on soundcloud or youtube is recorded with my computer balanced ontop of the keyboard/piano. Oh, apart from fading and dishes which were my phone.
Woo! Before this year I had a nokia brick .w.
But yeah my equipment really isn't up to anything anywaaaaaay

I know this is meant to be the off topic discussion, but like, what sort of music were you thinking to do for the game anyway?
Theres a few ways to go about it- scenery music which changes with the backgrounds; Character theme songs which swap out when you talk to them on their own, and a few for when theres more than one character onscreen at once; or music that follows the story, so, it is determined by where the script is up to.

I was thinking music would be those crap chiptune(ish) things I have on SC, but I also realize I've never really done BGM before.

I was thinking there'd be location themes, Character themes and event themes, and that one would take precedence over another depending on the situation-- mostly depending on if it changes the mood.
so... maybe not place themes, maybe just one main background theme that gets taken over by character themes or event themes depending on the situ

I wonder why you ask? I worry that, if I talk about pony, I'll come off looking, I dunno, weirder than I already do.

I might have you compose something instrumental and do my own arrangement of it (to keep the instrumentation consistent)-- or you might just cover the music. I reckon you're more than capable.

But, I'm sure I can make something that loops.

I am totally discouraged. It's embarassing working around you 'cause you could music (verb) rings around me. We're both limited in tech but I'm limited in skill.

It's weird talking about pony to people who aren't fans. Kind of like trying to explain a videogame to your mum; "why is he jumping on turtles?" or "which one is the good guy?"

Scootaloo & her friends ("Sweetie Belle" and "Apple Bloom") are adolescents who are trying to find their special talents. An episode or two is based on them, trying various things, and failing, missing the point "it'll come to you with time."
Three allows for a majority and a dissident. They come from fairly different lives and are each of a different race, but they all are looking for their place in the world. I identify with these three, as a unit, more than any.

And of course, they're all adorable.
